Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach was founded in 1870 by Matthais Day, a wealthy entrepreneur who fell in love with the area’s natural beauty. Through the years, the city has grown to 76 square miles with 65,000 full-time residents. Daytona Beach has a rich history filled with plantations, historical luminaries, and the birth of modern auto racing.

With its hard-packed sand and wide beaches, Daytona’s oceanfront was the perfect site for the debut of auto racing. Numerous land-speed records were set on Daytona Beach, with enthusiasts travelling from around the world to try their automobiles on what was later to be dubbed “The World’s Most Famous Beach.”

The first organized race was held on Daytona Beach in 1903. In 1948, NASCAR was formed at a meeting in a Daytona Beach Hotel. To this day, Nascar is still headquartered in Daytona Beach at “The World Center of Racing”, and the Daytona International Speedway hosts the legendary Daytona 500 every February.

Tourism is a major part of Daytona Beach’s culture. The city hosts more than 8,000,000 visitors, every year, to our area. Our famous beach, rivers and waterways have been a draw for vacationers from all over the world for more than a century.

Daytona Beach is the Home of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Bethune-Cookman University and Daytona State College, with also host campuses for the University of Central Florida and satellite facility for Florida State University’s medical school.
